GRAPHICS USED: Arizona became the first state to use a pictorial graphic on a plate in 1917, when it incorporated a steer's head between the state name and year on the left end of the plate. These plates were white on black. License plates in use from 1932 through 1934 were made of solid copper, and the 1934 issue had a patent number stamped in the edge of the plate, which was another license plate "first".
