Bioko (also known as Macias Nguema Bioko)

STATUS: Island off the coast of Equatorial Guinea, currently under jurisdiction of same.

FORMERLY: Fernando Po (also called Fernando Poo)

PRONOUNCED: bee OH ko

WORLD LOCATION: Atlantic Ocean

FIRST LICENSE PLATES IN USE: 1968 (as Macias Nguema Bioko), and in 1979 (as simply Bioko)

MOTOR VEHICLES CURRENTLY REGISTERED:  Approx. 1,000

PLATES WERE: Basically Spanish in design, black on white, either hand painted steel, or sometimes embossed or with black plastic or metal characters attached to a white metal base.

Plates had a letter prefix of up to three characters, and a simple serial number. Bioko was later divided into a north and south zone, and the numbers were suffixed accordingly. The former codes are as follows:

B prefix - Bioko (1979 on...)

MNB prefix - Macias Nguema Bioko (1968 to 1979)

I once owned a later issue motorcycle plate from Bioko Norte, and it was basically a small version of the passenger plate. Black on white hand painted, number B-211-N. I would assume that any motorcycle plates that were issued to either Bioko or MNBioko, were also smaller versions of the full sized car plates.

SINGLE PLATES OR PAIRS: Pairs

OVAL: GNQ   ISO: GQ

CARS DRIVE ON: Right
