FIRST LICENSE PLATES IN USE: 1920's or earlier.

MOTOR VEHICLES CURRENTLY REGISTERED:  Approx. 16,000,000

GRAPHICS USED:  There are some small pictorial graphics known, mainly on tabs or special non-passenger and governmental issues.

PLATES ARE: Owner provided, but usually embossed or cast metal. The latest issue is said to be black on gray for passenger cars, with three letters and four numbers. The former passenger series consisted of black on yellow plates, with two letters and four numbers, with a small two letter state abbreviation, and a fully spelled out district name.

Non-passenger types are as follows:

Hire Vehicles - white on red

Dealer/Test plates - white on green

Driver Education - red on white

Manufacturers - white on blue

Government Vehicles - black on white

Diplomatic - white on blue, with a CMD prefix (Ambassadors), CD (standard Diplo vehicle) and CC (Consular).

The President's car has a diagonally divided green and yellow plate, with "Presidente de Republica" on the middle.

High ranking Officials and Senators have gold or brass on black plates, with full inscriptions as to title, and a four digit serial number, with leading zeros.

Army - EB and a serial number, painted directly on the vehicle.

Navy - CFN and a serial number, painted directly on the vehicle.

Motorcycles - similar to passenger series, but smaller - two letters and three numbers.
