FIRST LICENSE PLATES IN USE: 1950's

MOTOR VEHICLES CURRENTLY REGISTERED:  Approx. 900

PLATES ARE: Officially issued.

Passenger plates - white on blue, numbers run from number 400 on up.

Motorcycle plates - white on blue, miniature of passenger plates. Numbers run from 100 to 399.

Administration vehicle - black on reflective white (some non-reflective), with red A prefix and a red seven pointed star. Numbers run from A*1 on up.

Administration motorcycle - miniature of full sized Administration plate, but without the star. Numbers run from A*101 on up.

The British Phosphate Commission - special plates were issued up to the mid 1980's. A simple four digit serial number in white on black, sometimes painted directly on the vehicle.

Early examples of Christmas Island plates are known that were used on private vehicles of British Phosphate Commission employees, with an XI prefix.
