MOTOR VEHICLES CURRENTLY REGISTERED: Approx. 40
PLATES ARE: Officially issued. Known plates are as follows:
1969 through 1977 - Black on
white small hand painted plates with "CO" and a low number, between 1 and
21. The Administrator of the island had plates number CO-001.
1977 through 1992 - All vehicles
on Cocos used Australian issue Commonwealth plates, with the "red Z" prefix.
1992 - current blue on white
series commenced. It's thought that the higher numbered plates, although
identical to the actually issued plates on Cocos, were special over-runs,
made extra for collectors. Current motorcycle plates on Cocos are also blue
on reflective white, with the same COCOS (KEELING) ISLANDS legend, but with
a simple serial number and no C prefix.

Here's an interesting photo from license plate collector Roy Hefner (California) - this shows a rare view of what I'm told is an airport terminal, or possibly a bus terminal. The sign says COCOS ISLAND, ALTITUDE 10 FEET. In the background on the right is a softball field. Not too many plates on this little hunk of coral, but in the original picture, a small white truck is visible (but the plate isn't). |
