STATUS: Independent nation, formerly known as the Ivory Coast (up until 1986), previously a territory of France (up until 1960).

WORLD LOCATION: Western Africa

FIRST LICENSE PLATES IN USE: 1986

MOTOR VEHICLES CURRENTLY REGISTERED:  260,000

GRAPHICS USED:  Current issue has an orange seal on one end of the plate, with a map of the country in a circle, above the letters CI. The rest of the current plate is reflective blue, and has a "info strip" across the bottom, with a small picture of a car, the car's serial number, and a bar code strip. There is also another serial number stamped into the edge of the plate. These security measures make Côte d'Ivoire plates very difficult for collectors to turn up.

Non-passenger types are as follows:

Dealer plates are white on blue or black, with the letter W for garage use, or WW for vehicles on delivery. Serial is ##W(W)CI01
Temporary Exports are similar to the Dealer issues, but have a two digit year suffix code added to the number (##W(W)CI0198)
Temporary issues are white on green - ###IT01 - the last two numbers being the district code
Official Government Vehicle plates are yellow with blue numbers - D followed by a Ministry/Company code number, then three serial numbers.
Diplomatic - black on orange - three digit embassy code, CD, then 2-3 serial numbers.
Non-Diplomatic Embassy Staff - white on reflective green three digit embassy code, IT, then 2-3 serial numbers.
Consular Corps - black on orange - three digit embassy code, CC, then 2-3 serial numbers.
Diplomatic Mission - black on orange - three digit embassy code, MD, then 2-3 serial numbers.
Ambassador - black on orange - three digit embassy code, CMD, then 1-2 serial numbers.
Army - white on black, one to five serial numbers preceded my the national flag.
Police - white on black, same as the Army issue, but with the additional symbol of a sword.
Air Force - white on black, same as the Army issue, but with the addition of a set of wings.
The President of Côte d'Ivoire has a white on blue plate, with just the letters PR (for President of the Republic).
Agricultural vehicles have five numerals, followed by a district code, in black on yellow.
