STATUS: Provincial island, under the jurisdiction of Venezuela.

FIRST LICENSE PLATES IN USE: Unknown

PLATES ARE: Officially issued. Current plates are standard Venezuelan issue, but have the legend PUERTO LIBRE (Free Port) across the bottom, in reference to the tax exempt status of the islands. In the background is a blue map of the islands. The plate has a simple six digit serial number, prefixed by zeros, which rarely reaches into the thousands.

An older plate from Isla Margarita exists, with PUERTO LIBRE to the left of the number, on a simple black on white issue (see photo album below).
