PLATES ARE: Owner provided. Current issues are French style, with the suffix code 976, preceded by two or three numerals, and a letter. Plates used before 1990 (as shown in the header photo) were of a distinctive style, with up to three numerals, and two letters (starting with AA), and the abbreviated island name MTE. This series ran up to 999 AB MTE, before the new French codes came into use. Plates used before 1986 used two numbers and a single letter, followed by MTE, as in "53B MTE".

New Car Delivery plates are similar to passenger, but have the letters WW in the number.

Dealer plates are similar to passenger, but with the letter W in the number.

Military vehicles display standard French military plates.
