STATUS: Territory under the League of Nations, 1919 through 1935. Part of Germany from 1935 through 1945. Under the administrative control of France from 1945 through 1956. Became a province of Germany in 1956.

WORLD LOCATION: Europe

FIRST LICENSE PLATES IN USE: 1919

PLATES WERE: Officially issued. Early plates were black on white, with a simple serial number prefixed by SAAR. From 1935 through 1945, as part of Germany, German plates were used, again, with the SAAR prefix (see header photo). Under French control, black on red plates were in use, with the letters SA and a serial number. Starting in 1947, white on black French style plates came into use, along with a SA oval. These plates had four numbers, the letters OE, and a number, the last number being a code digit denoting the district of issue.
