Trieste
STATUS: Former part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (until 1918), then part of Italy until 1945. In 1954, Trieste split, and became part of Italy and Yugoslavia. The part of Trieste located on the Istrian Peninsula is currently part of the nation of Slovenia, when Slovenia split from Yugoslavia in 1991.
