Upper Volta


STATUS: Former African nation (from 1960 to 1983), now known as Burkina Faso. Was previously part of French West Africa (before 1960).

CAPITAL:  Ouagadougou

WORLD LOCATION: Western Africa

FIRST LICENSE PLATES IN USE: 1960

MOTOR VEHICLES CURRENTLY REGISTERED:  Approx 16,000.

PLATES WERE: Owner provided.

Passenger plates were white or silver on black, in a variety of designs, with the letter B, up to four numbers, the letters HV (for Haute Volta), and a code number - 1 for the capital city, 2 for Bobo Dioulasso, and 3 for all other districts.

Diplomatic plates were red on green, with the letters CD, and embassy code, four numerals, and the letters HV.

Government vehicles were similar to passenger plates, but the Upper Voltan tri-color crest was on the plate.

Temporary issues were black on green, with one letter, four numbers, the letters IT HV, and the city code number.
